GBM 8: The District Discussion - Gentrification and Urban Renewal in D.C.

Thursday, November 14th, 2013

"Gentrification" and "urban renewal" are buzz words these days....but what do they really mean? is there a difference?

D.C.’s population grew at a faster rate than any other U.S. state, from 2010-11 and from 2011-12! But who exactly is moving in? and who is consequently moving out?

Come join Community Roots as our Month of Poverty continues, with an education & dialogue-based GBM, as we address the positive and negative social and economic implications of various "urban revival" patterns and techniques.

GBM 7: Who's On Top? Poverty in Perspective

Thursday, November 7th, 2013

Come Join Community Roots this week for an interactive simulation of what it looks like to live in poverty - how will you develop your community based on the allocation of resources? what are your top priorities: housing, education, or security? how will you react when things don't go as planned?
This week's GBM will be co-facilitated by members of the Nonprofit organization City Year. Check out http://www.cityyear.org/
for more information on their organization.

We look forward to seeing y'all on Thursday! And as always, bring a friend or two!

GBM 6: FACE YOUR FEARS

Thursday, October 24th, 2013

This week's GBM will be two-fold, we hope to see you at both parts!

1) (Thurs) From 10am - 1pm on Hornbake Plaza, stop by to add to our MONTH OF FEAR MURAL. We will have paint available, all you have to do is put up the words or images that best describe your fear(s).

2)Thurs) At 6:15 we will be meeting per usual, to discuss the mural and our fears in general - how do they motivate us? inhibit us? how do we acknoledge them? how do we overcome them?

Now the scary part:
Each attending member is challenged to bring (at least) one friend with them!!

GBM 5: "I only sit with people like me"

Thursday, October 17th, 2013

So there are statistics for UMD that show a diverse student body but what we don't typically see is the full utilization of engaging with one another. It's almost like we self-segregate ourselves, thus further separating us from one another. Join us for one of our more well known meetings of the year on Thursday this week for a workshop, discussion and reflection of what it means to be a student at a school that prides itself on diversity.

This is a meeting you don't want to miss! For many of us, this was the meeting that we fell in love with Croots mission. Whether it's your first time or 15th time coming to Croots, we always encourage you to bring a friend!

GBM 4: HOMOPHOBIA - Start of C-Roots Month of Fear

Thursday, October 10th, 2013

We'll be talking all about SEX and LOVE. So if you know ANYTHING about either of these, COME.

And BRING FRIENDS.

Come out to talk about homophobia in our society, on our campus, and in your life.

Hear others' opinions about this issue and share your own!

GBM 3: Government Shutdown 101

Thursday, October 3rd, 2013

Due to the urgency and relevance of the government shutdown earlier this week, we decided to divert from our original topic on Fear of Failure. The shutdown effects us all in ways you may not be aware of. If you are unfamiliar or concerned about the topic, C-roots welcomes all to come learn more about what is going on in our government. C-Roots is always a safe space for all people.

If you're an expert or if you are just starting to get involved with political, social activism, we welcome you to come join us!!

GBM 2: SPEAK UP! Letter Writing Campaign

Thursday, September 26, 2013

This is our September ACTION week!!!

For all you concerned activists out there, we know there is some issue you feel is not being addressed adequately - whether on campus, at the county level, or at the federal level. So come join Community Roots and several other student organizations to SPEAK UP, share the issues that are most important to you, and ENGAGE FOR CHANGE!

We will be meeting at the Stamp Student Union this week (room TBD).
Our dialogue will center around this week's participants, and then you will be equipped to write letters to whatever official is best suited to address the issues you think are most important!

Envelopes, stamps, and paper provided!
